Khaana
Khazana, which translates from Hindi to a “Treasure House
of Food” is the brainchild of a husband and wife team. Madan
Gandhi, a Major from the army, wanted to do something on his
own, after having retired. “My wife was qualified in catering
and being in the army, man-management was built into me. It was
just natural for us to start this venture.”
Speaking on how it was working, Mrs. Mala Gandhi said, “There's
nothing like a husband-wife team. It is easy to address a problem
and it is certainly great fun being together. We taste everything
personally and we give a lot of importance to cleanliness and hygiene.
I did my catering course way back in Chennai at Adyar.”
But why a food complex? “The idea was to bring to Coimbatore,
the
food complex concept which was not in the city previously. The
food complex idea is that different people have different tastes.
A food complex can cater to all of these tastes. In a family of
say, four, somebody may be a pure vegetarian, somebody may prefer
South Indian cuisine or some may prefer North Indian cuisine or
Chinese. Not only are the tastes different, but also some may
be light eaters who may have just an ice cream or a cup of coffee.
So when we saw that there was no place where we could go have all
these options, we said why not go about providing that option to
families in Coimbatore.”
Malgudi is the air-conditioned restaurant on the ground
floor, serving South Indian and North Indian vegetarian dishes,
Thali meals, mini-meals and special meals...all in the ambience
of a house. For lunch, the menu is completely North Indian, while
in the evening there's South Indian snack and tiffin items. The
Malgudi kitchen is exclusively for vegetarian food only.
As you walk past Malgudi, you spy a cart that denotes the Chettinadu
connection and on the first floor is the air-conditioned Kaaraikudi
restaurant, where ethnic Chettinadu non-vegetarian cuisine is served,
again in the ambience of a house. Snack items like Idiyappam
and set dosas are also served.
Mings
Garden is the Rooftop multi-cuisine restaurant, above Kaaraikudi,
where Chinese and North Indian Tandoori cuisine, both vegetarian
and non-vegetarian, is available. It is open for lunch and dinner.
“The whole complex is nothing but a huge bungalow with different
restaurants at different spots. Right at the entrance there is
the coffee shop and the ice cream parlour, where you can have any
snacks like coffee, tea, snacks, fresh fruit juice and milkshakes.
During the day, we have only the coffee shop open there. This has
40 covers. In the evenings the garden restaurant is thrown open
and more items can be had. Only vegetarian food is served there.
We planned the layout of the restaurants in such a way that only
vegetarian food is served on the ground floor. And we have separate
kitchens for the vegetarian and non-vegetarian cuisine”.
“The whole campus is spacious, neat and clean, with ample car
parking
space, with a playpen for children. We wanted this to be a leisure
spot rather than just a place where one would eat and go away.
It is a family restaurant and a place where a family could eat and
at the same time make it kind of a leisure outing. Since it is
only six months since we started, we wanted to establish ourselves
and create the awareness before we go for outdoor catering and so
on. We will soon have a sweet stall and a bakery ”, added Gandhi.
Khaana Khazana is open between 12.00 and 4.00 pm for lunch and
7.00 to 11.00 PM for dinner.
