Loom
World is an aggressive marketing effort from the State Government
to protect the interests of handloom weavers and societies, explore
and showcase the rich tradition and skill of our handloom weavers
and help find newer markets for the handloom sector in Tamil Nadu.
This retail outlet has a wide choice and representation of products
because of the more than 1,200 silk and handloom production societies
in Tamil Nadu that are associated with it. Loom World at Coimbatore
has been a huge success with a turnover of more than Rs.15 crore.
It
was envisaged as a direct selling point for exclusive handloom silk
products from reputed societies in the state, where consumers can
buy at reasonable rates. Apart from silk sarees, other varieties
of fabric and furnishings of export quality are also available.
Co-optex, which targets the middle and the lower income
group, procures about 30% of handloom products manufactured by the
various handloom societies in Tamil Nadu. Loom World buys the remaining
70% of the products and targets the high-income group.
As
it is very difficult for the ordinary buyer to discern between original
and duplicate sarees, Loom World takes care to educate consumers
on the duplicate sarees available in the market and also ensure
the quality of Jarigai (gold thread border) through
testing facilities available at its labs. Quality Jarigai costs
about Rs. 2,500 for one mark, which is about 240 grams.
Plans are on the anvil to export silk sarees under the brand name
‘Loom World’.
