| The government
of Tamil Nadu's initiatives to promote Tier-II cities, for increased
investment in the Information technology sector, have paid off pretty
well. To start with Intel has expressed its interest in setting up
its operations in Coimbatore. Intel is the number one microprocessor
chip manufacturer in the world. The majority of work done at Intel
India is software and hardware engineering. However the kind of operations
Intel is looking to start in Coimbatore is not very clear as yet.
Already, Intel India's Bangalore operations comprises the largest
number of Intel divisions in any country outside the US. Intel India's
Bangalore operations include the Intel India Design Centre and sales
and marketing operations spread over 200,000 square feet of office
and lab space.
A series of seminars in partnership with the private sector were
being organised to attract information technology investment in
the Tier-II cities and towns. A conference named "Business
opportunities in information technology" was being organised
in December at Coimbatore in partnership with the Confederation
of Indian Industry.
