Set up with the objective
of promoting the electronics industry in Tamil Nadu, Electronics
Corporation of Tamil Nadu Limited (ELCOT), has been actively involved
in:
 1.Creating
infrastructure, helping entrepreneurs in developing computer software
and hardware activities, by promoting joint ventures, providing marketing
and managerial support for these ventures and providing technical
support for small and medium sectors.
2. ELCOT has an in-house technology development which provides database
and technical assistance. It also assists state funding institutions
like TIIC (Tamilnadu Industrial Investment Corporation) and
SIPCOT (State Industrial Corporation Of Tamilnadu) for analysis
and evalauation of Electronics related projects.
3. It has around 27 associate companies, in areas of components, consumer
electronics, communication equipment, power electronics systems, software
development and infrastructure development.
ELCOT is also the the promotional agency designated by the Government
of Tamil Nadu for promoting IT industries in the state of Tamil
Nadu. One of its proud achievements being the setting up of Tidel
Park at Taramani.
# Its involved in various e-governance and computer education initiatives
of Government of Tamil Nadu.
# It has entered into a joint venture agreement with WorldTel,
Mauritius, to set up a joint venture under the name of WorldTel
Tamil Nadu Pvt. Ltd. This joint venture project will lay about
2,000 kms of fiber optic backbone, connecting and covering all the
major towns in the State. The needed statutory clearances including
FIPB (Foreign Investment Promotion Board) and ISP (Internet
Service Provider) approval have been obtained. The optical fibre cable
laying work has commenced.
The emphasis in the years to come will be in the following areas:
1. Create infrastructure for software development at Chennai, Coimbatore,
Hosur and Trichy.
2. Encourage Tamil Nadu companies to globalise their operations, to
meet the demands of economy.
3. Encourage global companies to set up operations in Tamil Nadu.
4. Encourage joint venture initiatives in cutting-edge technologies.
