Atthar Jamath Majeed
or the Big Mosque as it is
otherwise known, is a celebrated place of worship for Muslims in
Coimbatore. Located on Oppanakara Street in close proximity
to the Victoria Town Hall, it is right in the middle of one
of the busiest commercial parts of the city.
Originally,
a group of Muslims had come from Nellai, on business to Coimbatore.
They were selling 'Atthar' (Perfume with a blend of natural
extracts). They built houses in Big Bazaar Street one of
the famous shopping areas in Coimbatore. Having set base there,
they found the need for a place of worship. In 1830, a mosque by
the name of Atthar Jamath Majeed was built. In 1904, the
mosque was built as it appears today, with its distinctive minarets.
In 1920, with the increase in the number of this group of people,
the Atthar Jamath Majeed Society was formed with bylaws and
statutes. Today, the mosque has been beautified and expanded at
a cost of more than Rs 20 lakh. In addition to this, a smaller
mosque has been opened up near the Railway Station. The two other
mosques Hazrat Jungal Bir Darga on Trichy Road and
the Hazrat Gemisha Darga on Big Bazaar Street also
come under the purview of the society.
