- PSG Polytechnic, one of the oldest and largest Polytechnics
in the region today, is started by PSG and Sons' Charities.
The Polytechnic offers highly work-oriented education along
with industry-institute interaction. |

-The irrepressible
G D Naidu writes to the Government announcing that he
now has the ability to manufacture five-valve Radio sets in
the country at a mere Rs 70/- a set. |

-G D Naidu
(who did not have the benefit of formal education) establishes
the Sir Arthur Hope College of Technology and the Sir
Arthur Hope Polytechnic. |

-The PSG College of Arts and
Science is formed as an intermediate college. It attained
autonomous status in 1978. It is the largest Arts and Science
College in the region. |

-Sim's Park, Coonoor, is
founded. Its beautiful flowerbeds are a botanist's delight.

-G. R. Govindarajulu of
the P.S.G group, becomes President of the Indian Chamber
of Commerce and Industry, Coimbatore (ICCIC). |

-PSG College of
Technology is founded by PSG and Sons' Charities. The
focus of the college is on production-oriented industrial training.

-GD Naidu's brainchild -
the indigenously built Petrol engine two-seater Car (costing
a mere RS 2,000/-) rolls out. Production was stopped subsequently,
because of the Government's refusal to grant the necessary license.

Manufacturers' Association (SIEMA) is founded with Dr
G R Damodaran of PSG institutions as its founder

-Lakshmi Machine
Works Limited enters into a collaboration with Rieter
Machine Works Limited, Switzerland. |

-On 29th November, Sir Robert
Stanes lays the foundation stone for the building that presently
houses the Coimbatore Corporation. |

-The G D Naidu
Industrial Exhibition, a landmark on Avinashi Road, conceptualised,
designed and built by the great man himself, is opened on 2nd
January. |

-K Damodaraswami
Naidu and his brothers open their first vegetarian restaurant
at R S Puram. This marks the beginning of the now famous Sree
Annapoorna chain of restaurants. |
| 1969 |
-Coimbatore District Small
Industries Association (CODISSIA) is formed with 40 members.
The association is dedicated to the cause of small scale industries
and has been a catalyst in the organising of international Industrial
Fairs. |

-The Tamil Nadu Agricultural
University is established. It offers Under-graduate, Post-graduate
and Ph.D. Programmes in Agriculture, Horticulture, Agricultural,
Engineering, Forestry and Home Science. These programmes
are offered through its ten constituent colleges, which are
housed in seven different campuses. |

-On the 4th of January,
Coimbatore's greatest industrialist G D Naidu passes
away. |
| 1975 |
-K G Hospital is founded
by industrialist and philanthropist K Govindaswamy Naidu.
KG Hospital is the fourth in the country to be ISO 9002
certified. |
| 1976 |
-The Anaimalai / Indira Gandhi Wildlife Sanctuary in
Coimbatore district, is established. Top Slip is a popular
tourist halt in the Anaimalai hills. |
| 1980 |
-The State
Forest Services College is established. This is the second
oldest forestry training centre in India. |

-The Bharathiar University is
established in Coimbatore. Named after the great Tamil Poet
Subramania Bharathiar, it receives University Grants
Commission recognition in 1985. |
| 1983 |
-The Inland Container Depot
is opened in Coimbatore. Initially under the Southern Railway,
it was taken over by the Container Corporation in November
1989. |

-The PSG Institute of Medical
Sciences and Research (PSG IMS&R) is established. |
| 1986 |
-K.G. Balakrishnan, Chairman,
KG group, becomes President of the Indian Chamber
of Commerce and Industry, Coimbatore (ICCIC). His leadership
sees new vitality infused into the organisation. |
| 1994 |
-The PSG Institute of Management
(PSGIM) and the PSG College of Nursing are set up.

-The Coimbatore Stock Exchange
commences operations with the screen-based trading system.

| 1998 |
-February 14th. The afternoon calm
is shattered by a series of bomb blasts in the city that leave
50 dead and more than 200 injured. The blasts, a few days before
the Elections, also jolt investor-confidence in the city. |

-The Tamil Nadu Agricultural
University receives the 'Best Institution Award' from the
Indian Council for Agricultural Research (ICAR). |

-The permanent Trade Fair complex
COINTEC (CODISSIA INTEC Technology Centre), is opened.
The complex boasts the country's largest column-free exhibition
hall of international standards
